Oil dewatering and desalting plants, steam generators

Klaster Trading House delivers electrical dehydrator plants and steam boilers.

The plant is designed for removal of salt and water from oil. The above-mentioned substances and mechanical impurities, if present in oil, have a harmful effect on operation of equipment of oil refineries, in particular:

• if the content of water is considerable, the pressure inside the oil refining apparatuses is increased and their output is decreased, energy consumption becomes larger.

• if salts are deposited in the pipes of ovens and heat exchangers, they need to be cleaned frequently, the heat transfer coefficient is decreased, severe corrosion appears; in addition, the buildup of salts and mechanical impurities in residual oil products (mazut and tar) deteriorate their quality.

Oil dewatering is implemented by destruction (breakdown) of a water-oil emulsion with the help of demulsifiers that contribute to the destruction of the water droplets dispersed in oil. However, even if oil is significantly dewatered to a formation water content of 0.1-0.3% (which is technically too difficult), because of its high mineralization the residual content of chlorides is rather high and becomes even higher if crystalline salts are present in oil. Therefore, only dewatering for preparation of oil of most oil fields for refining is not enough. The residual salts and water in oil are removed with the help of the operation which, in essence, does not differ much from the dewatering process and is called desalting. This operation consists in mixing oil with fresh water, destructing the emulsion formed and subsequently separating oil from wash water with salts and mechanical impurities dispersed in it.

The principle of operation of an electrical dehydrator is as follows: when an oil emulsion is found in an electric field the negatively charged particles of water collide with each other, and the dielectric shell of a droplet is broken down if the charge potential is high enough. As a result, the small water droplets merge with each other and become larger, which allows them to precipitate in the electrical dehydrator. Because salt in oil is dissolved in water, the simplest solution looks like removing salt and water at a time with the help of an electrical dehydrator.

It is impossible for desalting to be implemented in one stage. Therefore in case of high salt concentration, fresh water is added to oil with several washings in an electrical dehydrator consisting of 2-3 serially connected stages.

Decrease in the content of salts in oil using an electrical dehydrator leads to considerable savings: the run time of plants approximately doubles, fuel consumption reduces, apparatus corrosion decreases, catalyst flow rates diminish, quality of gas turbine and boiler fuel, coke and bitumen improves. It is necessary to heat emulsion prior to electrostatic dehydration to allow destruction of stabilized emulsions. This thermal and electrostatic dehydration can be designed in the form of one tank – heater-treater.

Klaster Trading House delivers high-tech once-through boilers from the most famous international manufacturers. This type of boiler allows generating high-pressure and high-temperature steam efficiently, in which case the boiler’s reliability is increased due to the absence of a pipe coil. The cost of maintenance of the once-through boilers is significantly lower.
